I have a small head. Yup it can’t be denied that when I was born my aunty looked at me and laughed at how small my head was or that in high school I could fit all the hats in Toys’R’Us designed for infants. Do you need more evidence than a friend seeing a photo of me when I saw younger, collapse with happy tears at remarking that my head was smaller than a hydrangea flower. It makes me wonder how on earth my parents found hats for me as a child.
Just 4 weeks to go and I think I’m entering that “40 weeks is too long, can I have my baby now?” stage some of you know and love. With this joyous phase, comes the rounding up of all my favorite parenting tools because “toys” just don’t cut it when it comes to a screaming infant who doesn’t know what it wants. There are a few things mandatory to the parent’s arsenal that fit in all gladiatorial arenas both inside and outside the home.
Out and About.
Pram toys! Clip it onto a pram, stroller, play gym, highchair….I don’t care, just clip it onto anything near your child when you want a little peace, whimsy and tactile education. Colorful with noisy crinkly bits, horns and mirrors, the Lamaze pram toys are not only educational entertainment, they have cute names and personalities typed onto the pacaking (play along, at-home-mums and dads). Lamaze have 27 all up including mermaids and pirates, parrots and T-rex’s but my current favorite has to be Daisy Dino.
In the Bath.
For me : Every parent needs a Boon bath pod in their life and it’s my go to gift when I know someone hasn’t beat me to it. We have the old generation Frog pod which has really made the bathroom a safe, clean and fun place to be. Kidlet loves packing away his toys and its much for effective than the old scool nets with the suction pods. My favourite from the new edition is the What pod, complete with a spot to store you soap and washcloths.
It started with the Boon Pulp silicon feeder and then spread like fire through my Mother’s group. I ended up having to do a run to Toys are us to stock up Boon feeding toys when the kids started solids and everyone was at the wits end. Since then I’ve gone on to buy : Squirt, a baby food dispensing spoon which was perfect for feeding bub mushy food on the go Grass, a counter top drying rack for bottles and utensils making life cute and easy to clean
& Twig to keep all those lids and fiddly things in check.
My first little one loved the penguin squueze and bend rattle...unfortunaly we didn’t own one so he kept pinching it off other children. Fortunately we had a Lamaze symphony motion Gym to steer our baby away from a life of crime. I’ve got the space symphony and soon my niece/nephew to be will have the pond symphony.
While all this sounds like a tale of shopping, planning and to some extent addiction on my part, it’s really an excuse to celebrate the coming of kidlet 2! Tomy & Bright Green Laces would love for you to enjoy some of these wonderful products and what better way than a give away. So here’s how you play:
Its 2am, the Late show with Stephen Colbert is over and I’ve been kicked awake from the inside so what better time to blog while “who’s the boss?” plays in the background. These hours spent begrudgingly awake are often reserved for my nesting so it only makes sense that a baby wishlist appears here. Besides, shopping for a mum-to-be can be a daunting task. When I was younger, I was blissfully unaware, purchasing cute unnecessary plush toys, Johnson and Johnson products and season:size inappropriate cutesy clothing. Now I know what is actually useful, it’s strangely tougher. So much of parenting is about personal preference. Here’s whats on my (work requested) shopping list from which I am ironically banned from shopping.
Tasman Eco Amore Bassinet in white $199: CHOICE approved, safety tested, breathable fabric, complete with lockable castors, this bassinet sounds pretty good to me. the fact it suits the decor of my home is a perfect bonus. For bub #1, my neighbor lent me her bassinet since I was dubious about needing one. Thank god because after an emergency C section it was a god sent, particularly with the paranoia and concern that initially follows every normal night time baby squeak and gurgle.
Fitted bassinet sheets$15x 2: Once again, brand and plain vs printed doesn’t particularly matter as long as its a healthy cotton or bambo/cotton blend. You’ll need a few of these, particularly when life feels like an endless cycle of washing and you need a day off.
Comfort and Harmony Mombo Pillow$45: Consumer reviews are great and babies can surprisingly weight a lot. Give your lap the exercise and your arms a rest with a good curved pillow. They are often multi purpose too, helping you get comfortable in the later stages of pregnancy, giving your back some support during feeding time and propping up bub when they are over tummy time but still alert.
Kinderglo fun safe portable nightlight $? : I love the new quarter moon shape with easy grip, soft lighting and recharge station. We had a different version of a portable night light the first time around but it just couldn’t handle the enthusiastic play of a toddler. It proved so hand for middle of the night check ins and feedings, I just know we’d use it til it’s end once again.
Cherub 4 in 1 thermometer $49 : Have you ever tried to measure the temperature of a squirming sick baby? Lets just say there’s a reason the pediatric ward in hospitals use infrared thermometers now. I really wish someone had told me about these amazing things earlier!
If you need more generic + unisex gifts, Lanisoh for breast feeding mums (doubles as baby lip balm) , muslins (large ones which I collected many of), face washers, nappies (huggies!) and wipes (coles thick fragrance free) will seldom go unused in those early days.
Is you smart device net shopping finger ready? Mother’s tomorrow at 9am, the Disney x Bonds zippy wonder suits land in store and online. This iconic Aussie brand has won many devotees and part of it is just the way they made impractically colorful underwear a trend but for those of you who are still skeptical you’ll be won over the day you need to button up a baby onsie. It’s like trying to wrestle an octopus into a straight jacket without a zipper onsie.
The added bonus is the Bonds version always come in new and adorable prints. I often get onsie envy when I see a print I have missed out on because it’s sold out that quickly. Now before the rest of you non-baby knowing lovelies start dozing off, there’s a pretty great sports line on sale right now, let alone the aforementioned colorful undies.
If you know a new mum or even a well seasoned one whose kids you need to buy for, while the tutus and bow ties are adorable, in winter, you’ll never have to wonder if these onsies get used. Is it too early to start buying for soon to be number two?
